A place to learn, create and take action
At the edge of Rau Forest in Moshi, the Kili Green Hub has grown into a vibrant centre for environmental education and community action. Opened in January 2025 in collaboration with the Tanzania Forest Service (TFS), it brings young people, schools, volunteers and project leaders together to learn, create and make a difference.
What started in 2021 with a tree nursery next to a derelict building has grown into a thriving environmental hub. Today, more than 100 young Kili Heroes come together every Saturday for workshops and hands-on activities focused on climate, nature and practical solutions.
From seedlings to climate action
The Hub is home to a tree nursery producing more than 45,000 seedlings every year. The young trees are used to restore Rau Forest and its riverbanks, and are also distributed to schools, hospitals and local communities.
Young people from six schools regularly take part in tree planting, forest education, clean-ups, plastic recycling, storytelling and climate workshops. They learn not only about environmental challenges, but also how they can become part of the solution.
From collecting seeds and growing trees to transforming plastic waste and exploring the biodiversity of Rau Forest, the Kili Green Hub makes environmental education practical, social and inspiring.

Protecting Rau Forest
Rau Forest is one of Tanzania's rare urban forests, just three kilometres from Moshi town centre. Established as a forest reserve in 1951, this unique lowland forest plays an important role in protecting water resources, storing carbon and providing a home for indigenous trees and wildlife.
But the forest faces growing pressure from illegal logging, agriculture, grazing and invasive species.
The future of Rau Forest depends on the generation growing up around it.
