The future is in our hands
The driving force behind our Kili Lighthouse Educational Programme
Thanks to the generous support of our Dutch sponsor, Pharus Stichting, Greenmanjaro has developed the Kili Lighthouse Educational Programme and its accompanying extra-curricular student book, The Future Is in Our Hands.
Just as a lighthouse shines through the darkness, this programme uses knowledge to illuminate the way forward. It helps young people develop the awareness, courage, and practical skills they need to navigate an uncertain future and adapt to the challenges of climate change while protecting nature and the environment.
Our mission is to give Tanzanian students and teachers greater access to engaging educational materials and practical learning opportunities. Children gain practical knowledge through workshops and hands-on learning, including how to recycle plastic waste, plant and care for trees, create vegetable gardens and make the most of Tanzania's rich, fertile soil. In doing so, they gain knowledge and valuable skills they can carry into the future.
Created for Tanzanian students ages 13 – 16 years
The Future Is in Our Hands is an 80-page, A4 extra-curricular student book developed for secondary school students.
12 units explore environmental and climate-related issues through an East African, Tanzanian lens. Each unit uses relevant local facts, examples and figures to show how the topic connects to climate change.

Positive, practical and engaging
Our message is one of hope and possibility.
Rather than overwhelming students with frightening facts or messages of doom and gloom, the book uses colourful illustrations, fun facts and interactive exercises to spark curiosity and inspire action. The activities broaden students' vocabulary, deepen their knowledge and encourage them to think independently

From knowledge to action
Each unit combines environmental knowledge with practical activities, helping students connect what they learn in the classroom with the world around them.
For example, the unit Healthy Soil, Healthy Planet explains why healthy soil is essential for food production, biodiversity and climate resilience. Students are encouraged to investigate the soil around them and discover practical ways to protect and improve it.
Supported by the Tanzanian Ministry of Education
The Future Is in Our Hands is currently under endorsement by the Tanzanian Ministry of Education and is accompanied by a detailed teacher's Tips & Tricks manual. The manual explains how and why each unit should be taught, along with additional information, classroom activities, and exercises. This gives teachers the tools and confidence to bring every subject to life.
