Turning 1,531 students into Climate Heroes
In May 2025, 1,531 secondary school students from 47 schools across Northern Tanzania came together near Mount Meru for the Kili Kids Climate Festival, an unprecedented celebration of climate education, creativity and action.
Over two days, students aged 13–16 explored climate change through interactive workshops, storytelling, music, dance and hands-on activities. From trees and sustainable farming to plastic recycling and protecting biodiversity, the festival turned complex climate topics into experiences they could understand, enjoy and take home.
Message in a Bottle
The festival was about more than learning. It was about giving young people a voice, connecting them with each other and showing them that they can make a difference.
One of the highlights was Message in a Bottle, where every student wrote their own message to the world and placed it in a recycled-bottle lighthouse, a symbol of hope, action and the power of young voices.
The impact reached far beyond the festival itself. Students shared what they learned with their friends, families and teachers, spreading the message throughout their communities.

And the journey continues
Following the success of the festival, we are bringing the programme directly into schools through the Kili Climate Days, giving even more young people the opportunity to learn, connect and become Climate Heroes.

Qualitative Impact
A positive learning experience: Learning outside the traditional classroom makes education more enjoyable, tangible and memorable. This can help students associate education with positive experiences and increase their motivation to remain engaged in school.
Greater self-confidence and future perspective: By participating in interactive sessions and group activities, students are given opportunities to express themselves, develop skills such as teamwork and critical thinking, and feel part of something larger. This strengthens their confidence and their belief in a better future.
